Product Description

Overglaze dinnerware decals are ceramic transfers printed with glassy pigments and fired onto already-glazed ware at 750-900°C, bonding the design permanently into the glaze surface. Because the decoration fuses with the glaze rather than sitting on top of it, there is no film to peel and no adhesive to fail - which is why fired decals outlast any printed or vinyl alternative.

Why Overglaze for Dinnerware?

Overglaze firing is the most widely used decoration method for custom plates, bowls, platters and teaware, and for good reason. The moderate firing temperature allows the widest colour range of any ceramic process, including bright reds, oranges and pinks that burn out at higher temperatures. It is also the only ceramic method that supports real gold, platinum and lustre finishes.

A correctly fired overglaze decoration withstands several hundred domestic dishwasher cycles, microwave use and normal cutlery contact, making it suitable for both promotional tableware and everyday retail ranges.

Design Options for Dinnerware

Full colour printing

We print multi-colour designs as spot colours matched to your Pantone references, with tight register between adjacent colours. Floral, geometric, classic and contemporary patterns all reproduce well in overglaze.

Precious metals and lustre

Real bright gold, platinum and mother-of-pearl lustre decals fire in the same range (740-850°C) and are used for rim bands, accents and premium giftware. These finishes are softer than pigment decoration, so hand washing is recommended.

Rims, centres and full wraps

Decals can be supplied as rim bands, centre motifs, scattered sprigs or full-surface wraps. Sheet layout is planned around your ware shape to minimise waste and unit cost.

Food Safety and Compliance

Dinnerware decoration contacts food directly, so compliance is specified on the fired result. We supply lead-free and cadmium-free pigment systems that meet FDA ceramic ware requirements, EU Directive 84/500/EEC, ISO 6486 release limits and LFGB for the German market. For designs on food-contact surfaces we recommend testing the fired ware, since release rates also depend on glaze chemistry and firing profile.

How to Order

  1. Send your artwork (AI, EPS, PDF or high-resolution PSD), ware type, glaze details and quantity.
  2. We confirm the feasible colour range and sheet layout, then quote.
  3. You fire and approve a sample sheet on your own ware - the only reliable way to judge fired colour on your specific glaze.
  4. Production, moisture-protected packing and worldwide shipping with export documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are overglaze dinnerware decals dishwasher safe?

Yes. Correctly fired overglaze decoration withstands several hundred domestic dishwasher cycles. Gold, platinum and lustre finishes should be hand washed to preserve their appearance.

Are overglaze decals food safe?

They can be. We use lead-free and cadmium-free pigment systems meeting FDA, EU 84/500/EEC, ISO 6486 and LFGB requirements, and recommend testing fired ware for food-contact surfaces.

What firing temperature do overglaze decals need?

750-900°C for standard overglaze pigments, and 740-850°C for precious metal and lustre decals. The decal must match the firing range your kiln and glaze support.

Can you match my Pantone colours?

Yes, within the range of pigments that survive overglaze firing. We agree the firing temperature first, then match spot colours to your Pantone references and confirm on a fired sample.

What is the minimum order?

MOQ starts from 100 sheets depending on decal size and sheet layout. A sample sheet of 10-20 pieces is available before volume production so you can test on your own ware.

How long does production take?

Sampling takes 5-7 working days after artwork confirmation. Volume production takes 7-15 working days depending on quantity and design complexity.
